Top Tips for Getting the Support and Supervision Agenda Right
Why This Matters

A clear agenda creates focus and balance between performance, wellbeing and development.
This Week’s Top Tips
Noticing
- Notice whether sessions feel structured
- Pay attention to priorities
- Look at whether both people contribute
Reframing the Conversation
- Focus on what’s going well
- Ask what could be done differently
- Use reflection rather than judgement
Core Areas to Include
- Progress against objectives
- Reflection on challenges
- Team relationships
- Feedback both ways
- Continuing Professional Development
One additional item I always used at the start of a support and supervision session was something I learned from attending a training course. It’s called ‘dustbin’ – a chance to get something off the chest, before the structured meeting starts.
This might be a personal issue that’s affecting work or a team dynamic, that the staff member needs to ‘get off their chest’ before the focus of the meeting.
This isn’t recorded as part of the ‘official’ conversation, although if the content of the ‘dustbin’ requires to be discussed and recorded, it is added as an agenda item.
Broadening CPD
- Include learning beyond training
- Encourage sharing ideas
- Link development to goals
A Gentle Reminder
A good agenda creates space for thinking.
Over to You
Add one CPD question to your agenda.
Over to You:
Release Your Potential

These are my thoughts and perspectives (I’m not necessarily right or wrong, simply starting a conversation).
So, what about your thoughts? What is YOUR perspective?
- Do any of these things ring true for you and can you picture yourself putting these tips into action?
- What would it look, sound and feel like if you put some of these tips into action – for you and others?
- What barriers might you come against when putting these tips/ideas into action? How might you overcome them?
- Who could give you support and how?
- Have you tried these tips and ideas out and, if so, what have you learned?
I’d love to hear your thoughts, reflections, gut reactions, perceptions, experiences and wisdom.
Remember that sharing our experiences can help others, so your thoughts and comments are always welcome.
