Top Tips for Support Mental Health Without Becoming a Therapist
Mental Health Week takes place from 11th – 17th May 2026.
Why This Matters

In values‑driven organisations, people often feel a strong pull to support colleagues who are struggling.
While compassion is essential, many people worry about saying the wrong thing, crossing boundaries or feeling responsible for others’ wellbeing.
Mental Health Awareness Week is a good time to remind ourselves that we can be supportive without taking on roles we are not trained for.
Clear, compassionate boundaries protect everyone involved.
This Week’s Top Tips
Getting Clear
- Remember that listening does not mean fixing
- Be clear with yourself about what support you can realistically offer
- Notice when concerns go beyond what a colleague or manager can hold alone
Working with Others
- Listen without rushing to solutions
- Use simple, respectful language rather than clinical terms
- Encourage people to access appropriate support when needed
Sustaining yourself
- Set boundaries that allow you to remain kind without becoming overwhelmed
- Avoid carrying concerns alone, use supervision or peer support
- Recognise that signposting is a form of care, not a failure
A Gentle Reminder
You can be compassionate and boundaried at the same time. Both are essential for sustainable practice.
Over to You
You might like to reflect on how comfortable you feel holding supportive conversations and where clearer boundaries could help.
Looking after mental health works best when responsibility is shared, not personalised.
