Dementia Care

Dementia is a major challenge of the 21st century – we live in an ageing society with increasing numbers of people from all sections of society diagnosed with dementia. According to the Alzheimer’s Society website there are:

  • currently 800,000 people with dementia in the UK
  • 64% of people living in care homes with a form of dementia.
  • 670,000 carers of people with dementia in the UK

Relationship-centred and person-centred models of care require us to see each person with dementia as an individual with a life history, likes and dislikes and specific needs. We must address their universal psychological needs of attachment, identity, comfort, occupation, inclusion and love.

As Tom Kitwood (pioneer of person-centred care) once observed:

“Once you’ve met one person with dementia – you’ve met one person with dementia”

This range of courses will support those working with people with dementia and their loved ones to build upon current good practice.  Participants will learn about the impact of dementia and how compassionate, person-centred care can help those at all stages of the ‘dementia journey.’
